SS Margaret

LNRS Member Alan Dean has written to ask for information:

"In the mid-1950s I completed a history of Elder Dempster Lines and associated companies, with details of all the ships that were available at the time, including the ss Margaret, purchased in 1864.

Can anyone please supply any of the following details in order to try to complete the entry:

    • Photo or illustration
    • Year built
    • Name of builder (in Philadelphia USA)
    • Any information after date of purchase (7 December 1864)"

If anyone can assist with this, would they please post here and I'll make sure Alan gets the information.

Ted,

I’ve been searching for Alan’s missing SS Margaret since you first posted. Alan suggests 7/12/1864 as the purchase date, which is of course during the American Civil War. I have a particular interest in the Civil War and have posted information requests on a number of CW forums in the States. One of my fellow forum members based in SE Pennsylvania is happy to help, if he can, to find the builder, although he cautions that Philadelphia ship building records are at best fragmented. It would be helpful if Alan could let me have more detail on his suggestion that the Margaret was built in Philadelphia, although probably not under the name Margaret.

Hope all members are well in these days of living with COVID-19.
