SS Great Eastern

We have received the following request from Mr Simon Weedy:

"I am doing research for a book about the Great Eastern and its relationship with Liverpool, the city, and also LFC.  My main focus is the story of the main flagpole at Anfield which, as you'll know, was one of the masts of the Great Eastern. I am trying to tell the story of how the mast actually fell into the hands of - as the story goes - Everton FC when they were still at Anfield, before leaving for Goodison in 1892. I've trawled through hundreds of old newspaper archives from that time, along with various business directories etc, but as yet cannot find any reference to the actual transaction between whoever 'owned' the mast at that point, ie the shipbreakers, and Everton FC. There are many references to the 1889 auction and various items being sold off, but no mention of this specific item. I wondered therefore if you, either as a society or through an individual, has seen any written records pertaining to this? Even if you don't, then I'd still be very interested to hear about any memories/records/references you might have about the breaking up of the Great Eastern, a ship which had such a strong relationship with the city. I look forward to hearing from you."

If anyone can help with this, please get in touch with Mr Weedy at sjweedy@gmail.com, or leave a message on this forum.  Please don't forget to put a note on here to say what has been done.
