Sailing Times - Liverpool to Leith

We've received the following request for information from Graham Kyle.  If anyone is able to help, please feel free to contact him directly.

"I am a retired eye surgeon (Walton Hospital, and Aintree), now living in Wales; researching into medical history. I am preparing a talk on the supply of bodies, from Liverpool to Edinburgh for dissection in 1826. Several bodies were found in casks on the dockside, addressed to Leith, as “Bitter Salts”. Subsequent investigation found a ‘factory’ in Hope Street processing bodies dug from graves, or , perhaps direct from the workhouse infirmary. Other attempts to send bodies by coach were also made.

The ship was the Latona, a smack owned by the Carron Company.

My query is: How long was it likely to have taken to reach Leith? ( I presume they would go through the Forth and Clyde canal.)

Would any of your members be able to tell me, or suggest how I might find out? I have tried to ‘tie up’ arrivals and departures of the Latona from/ Liverpool and Leith, but the data is incomplete, so I am unable to work out even a rough time.

If anyone wants more of the gory details I can supply them.  Many thanks, Graham Kyle."

If anyone is able to help Graham, he can be contacted by email at grahamkyle33@gmail.com.  If you do get in touch with him, could you please make a note here or let me know as well.

Ted, I have been in touch with Graham and between us we have got some answers to his questions. I shall keep in touch with him so I can offer further help if necessary.

The Latona, along with her three sister ships. operated a four week cycle between Leith and Liverpool. Week one in her home port of Leith. Week two traversing the Forth and Clyde canal and onward out of the Clyde down to Liverpool. Week three would be spent in Liverpool reloading before heading back to Leith during the fourth week. With her sister ships a effective weeky service was provided between Leith to Liverpool.
