Nineteenth Century Sailing Times

A visitor to the website has asked the following question:

"My name is Samuel Van Ransbeeck. I am doing a Digital Humanities Start-up project at the John Rylands library in Manchester on the trade by Owen Owens & Son (John Owens being the founder of what would later become the University of Manchester). I have studied the bills of lading between 1840 and 1846 in the archive and while they list the departure date, obviously, the arrival date is not mentioned. I am looking to find out how average sailing times were in that period. I have found a list in Ocean Passages of the World and other sources, but for some destinations I cannot find the data. Could you point me in the right direction for finding average sailing times. Most destinations are in the Americas. I am aware that due to ship technology advancement, there are differences in sailing times but I am looking here to paint a general picture. As this is a start-up project it is beyond my reach to go to international archives and try to find the exact arrival dates."

If anyone can help Mr Van Ransbeeck, please let me know, or you can contact him yourself at thinksamuel@yahoo.com.

"Re. 19th century sailing times. I have some schooner crew agreements from 1891 with interesting information on passage times.
