Minnehaha, Salvage Case, 1861
Quote from Mervyn Rowlinson on 10 August 2020, 11:54Dear Shipmates:
I am digging into this hotly disputed salvage case. The Londonderry registered clipper ship, Minnehaha entered Liverpool Bay in March 1861 at the end of a voyage from New Orleans. Hitting bad weather the Minnehaha made a contract with the Liverpool tug, United Kingdom, later joined by a second tug, Storm King. Following a severed tow-rope Minnehaha was (allegedly) forced by the wind into the "Formby Hole." The tugs managed to retrieve the situation after being joined by a third tug, Enterprize, and the clipper was eventually delivered into Huskisson Docks.
I would be grateful if anyone can add to this account, including the tugs and "Formby Hole" - is this (or was this) a notorious place for shipwrecks?
With Thanks,
Merv Rowlinson
