Maritime Art - G Nelson

We have received another request from Jim Shuttleworth in California asking for information about a painting with Liverpool connections:

"I have acquired another Liverpool School painting, circa 1860-70.  It is of a brigantine off the Skerries lighthouse and is signed G. Nelson (Faintly).  There is no name on the vessel, but it does have a house flag that might prove useful in determining the vessel name.  Unfortunately, the seller put a small tear in it.  In the frame is a paper label for W.M. Walters, Samuel Walters' brother.  Your assistance with determining the vessel name would be appreciated.  Photos attached.  Thank you.

Hi Jim

Nice painting but, apart from admiring it, I can not tell you anything about the artist. His name does not appear in 'The Art of Nautical Illustration' by Michael E Leek, nor in the Merseyside Maritime Museum's 'Illustrated Catalogue of Marine Paintings.' No help either with the house flag which is not one of the better known ones. There are a few websites on house flags but these are listed by company rather than by an illustration of the flag.

Sorry I can't help.
