Alexandra Towing and Cran & Somerville (Leith Shipbuilder)
Quote from Mervyn Rowlinson on 25 October 2021, 16:58Dear Shipmates:
I am researching Leith built tugs. Alexandra Towing were a big customer of the Leith shipyard, John Cran (later Cran & Somerville). I have Tim Nicholson's, 1990, Take the Strain: The Alexandra Towing Company and the British Tugboat Business,1833-1987.
It seems Alexandra took a 25% share in the shipyard in 1917. Despite the large number of orders from Alexandra (14?) the shipyard filed for bankruptcy in 1927.
Does anyone know anything about the relationship of Liverpool's leading tugboat operator (at the time) and the Leith shipyard? Cran & Somerville's yard was eventually taken over by Henry Robb but I cannot find any link with Alexandra Towing.
Grateful to hear from you.
Regards
Dr. Merv Rowlinson
