Established in 1938, the Society’s aim is to encourage interest in the history of shipping through relevant research activity. Utilising the resources of the Merseyside Maritime Museum Archive Library, our Members pursue their own personal research or, from time to time, assist with projects which are run in conjunction with Museum staff.  Members also helpfully engage with enquiries which are received on a regular basis from people throughout the world.

Each year we organise a programme normally comprising 9 lecture presentations given either by Members or invited guest speakers and these are also held in the Maritime Museum.  Our aim is to produce a well balanced programme of topics that fall within a general maritime theme. Details of the current series of talks is available under News and Events

Members are given almost exclusive use of the Archive Library on most Mondays throughout the year in a convivial and enthusiastic atmosphere of shared interest.

One of the cornerstones of Society membership is receipt of our quarterly journal. In recognition of the 70th Anniversary,  a recent Lloyd’s List remarked  that....  ‘the Society publishes a hugely readable bulletin and has done so since 1938, when some like-minded maritime folk got together on Merseyside to gather records and facts that might otherwise go missing’

Whilst a goodly proportion of our  core membership stems from Merseyside and the surrounding area, over half of our Members are located across the UK and we are particularly pleased to retain contact with many who reside as far away as Australia, Canada and the U.S.A. We welcome new members and for everyone, irrespective of location, the annual membership subscription is £12 sterling, giving entitlement to all Society facilities and receipt of ‘The Bulletin which is distributed by post on a quarterly basis. Our Editor is always pleased to receive articles for consideration for publication. Please see our ‘Contact Us page for further details.
